I’m often asked how I got started in the martial arts and rather than writing about it, I thought I would do a video and share my story.

"When I came to Arrowhead Martial Arts the first time and saw that many people are starting at, or over, my age helped me realize that you dont have to be a kid to begin taking martial arts lessons Its more personalized than any martial arts studio i’ve seen….no getting lost in the crowd! its a comfortable learning environment. Its a place where you expect more and more of yourself because of the quality of the instructors. I love this studio!" - Heather Shaw
I like the video. Gives a nice background. It also makes a nice change to the newsletters.
This was very cool, hope you will do more video news letters!

I had no idea you started first in Tae Kwon Do! It makes a lot of sense why you focus so much on street practicality but also have amazingly precise and fluid forms… That was one of the things that impressed me most when I first started in your trial program. At that point in my life, I had decided to leave the ‘dance world’ and put my energy into something that I could really use. Like you, I often stayed late with Cassie to watch you work with Shawn and George on form 2. I remember leaving the studio after class one night, feeling that I was finally moving TOWARD kenpo rather than simply moving AWAY from dance. Thanks for sharing your video story!
My journey began at about the age of five when my father, who was a second brown in American Kenpo, decided to enroll me into my first Kenpo class. Well, I was hooked, but unfortunately I was probably not ready for it. One night in our house, my grandmother grabbed my shoulder and I kicked her in the shins without thinking about it. That ended my training after just a few weeks. But the fire burned on. I watched tons of movies, learned from books, magazines and friends who had studied and picked up what I could. A few years down the road, I again was able to enroll; however, I enrolled in Shaolin Kempo, a pretty good system with some similarities and a nice blend of self-defense and tradition. I studied there for about ten years, even going to China to test for my Black Belt in the Shaolin Temple and became a chief instructor with my own studio for a year. But fate had something else in store. I went for a few months, again picking up things here and there but wanted to enroll into a good studio again. It was about this time that I saw the movie “The Perfect Weapon” (great movie by the way, lots of good fights) and decided I should give Kenpo another go. I was lucky to stumble across Arrowhead Kenpo early on in my search. After observing one class I was hooked and have been here since. I have had to take a hiatus from time to time with conflicting work schedules, health issues and family obligations, but I can assure you, as someone who has had the opportunity to see first many of the major popular systems from Ninjutsu to Tae Kwan Do, Brazilian Jiu Jutsu to close quarters combat, this is by far the most effective system out there. Working with Mr. Wheaton and the other instructors as well as learning from the other high ranking black belts at the semi annual camps has been amazing and I look forward to it for many years to come.
Awesome video with great information. It was very interesting to hear how you felt when you were first interested in the martial arts. I really enjoyed your video, and would love to hear more about your journey to your black belt. Thank you for having such a great place to learn Kenpo.
Thanks for all the great feedback everyone and glad you enjoyed it. I do appreciate it.
